The short answer: apply for the eTA right now, because most decisions come back within minutes, and write the urgent reason for your trip in the additional-details box. There is no rush option to buy or request, and a pending application will not get you on the plane, so the plan is to apply, watch your inbox, and decide about the flight early rather than at the check-in desk. You can apply for a Canada eTA in one sitting; it’s a paid private service, separate from the Government of Canada.
Applying on canada.ca costs only the government fee.
Two days is tight but not hopeless. The difficulty is not the form, it is the uncertainty: some applications need several days, and nobody can tell you in advance which group yours falls into. This guide is a plan for those 48 hours. If you are not sure why an application can drag, the common reasons an eTA application is delayed are worth a read while you wait, and the whole plan below assumes you start today, not tomorrow.
Do you actually need an eTA for this flight?
Check this first, because it takes a minute and can save the whole exercise. An eTA is for visa-exempt foreign nationals who fly into Canada. It is not for Canadian citizens, who must board on a Canadian passport, and it is not for most people who need a visitor visa, who cannot use an eTA. Visa-exempt travellers who arrive by land or by sea do not need one for that crossing in most cases.
If you are flying and your passport is from a visa-exempt country, the eTA is a condition of boarding. The exceptions are US citizens and permanent residents of the United States or Canada, who do not need an eTA. At check-in the airline reads your passport, and with no valid eTA tied to it the flight is closed to you.
What should you have ready before you open the form?
Gather four things so that nothing stops you halfway:
- The passport you will fly with. The eTA is tied to that single passport. A different passport, or a new one issued after approval, means a different eTA.
- An email address you can open right now. Every message about the decision goes there, and a typo in it can leave you without your approval. Read it back twice before you submit.
- A payment card that works online. A declined card costs you hours you do not have.
- Your trip facts in one sentence. Flight date, destination, and the reason the date is fixed.
What goes in the additional-details field?
The form has an optional box where you may add details that bear on your application. The question’s own example is “an urgent need to travel to Canada”, and it asks you to give relevant details so that processing is not held up.
Use it, and keep it plain. A good entry states the date you must be in Canada and the reason in a sentence or two, such as a hospital appointment, a funeral or a business commitment that cannot move. Leave out pleading and extra stories. Do not expect a promise from this: IRCC says to describe the situation, and it does not say the box speeds up a decision. It is simply the only place in the process to put the information, so it is worth using.
What does a 48-hour plan look like?
The table sets out what to do at each stage. The times are counted back from your departure.
| When | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| About 48 hours out | Submit the application with the urgent reason filled in | Most people hear back within minutes, so an early start leaves room for the slower cases |
| Within the hour | Look at your inbox and the junk folder | IRCC says automated emails can be caught by spam filters |
| Approval email arrives | Read the passport number in it against your passport, character by character | A wrong number means a new application, and time may run out |
| Nothing after several hours | Check your status and the junk folder again, and start preparing for a possible change of flight | You may be in the slower group, and moving a flight takes time |
| About 24 hours out, still no decision | Contact the airline about your options | Moving a flight takes time and has to happen before departure |
| Departure day | Fly only if the eTA is approved | Without it, boarding is refused |
Why is the 72-hour message a problem when you have 48 hours?
IRCC says that most people receive an email within minutes, but some applications need several days to process. For those, you can expect an email within 72 hours of applying, and that email tells you what to do next.
Read that carefully. A message that may arrive within 72 hours of applying can land after your plane has left. That is why the plan does not wait for it. If you are still empty-handed after a few hours, you should assume you are in the slower group and begin preparing for a possible change of date, while still hoping for the quick answer. A good source for the general picture is how long a Canada eTA takes, and what the different emails mean is covered in what each eTA status message means.
How do you check where the application stands?
Use your status check. To check your eTA status you need the passport you applied with and your application number or UCI, not the passport alone. The number comes in the confirmation, so do not delete those first messages.
Checking is useful for one thing: telling a waiting application apart from one that has asked you for something. If the status says more documents or information are needed, answer immediately. A request for documents is not a decision, and until you hold an approval you do not have an eTA. IRCC’s page on what happens after you apply describes these steps in order.
What if the approval comes but the passport number is wrong?
This is the one mistake that can still undo a quick approval. IRCC asks you to confirm that the passport number printed in the approval is identical to the one in your passport. If it differs, you have to submit a new application with the right number, and the page cautions that a late fix is not always possible. Open the approval message the moment it arrives, not the night before the flight. People confuse the letter O and the digit zero; read each character against the passport page.
What if there is no decision by the day before the flight?
Then the decision belongs to the flight, not the eTA. You cannot board without a valid eTA. So contact the airline, ask what it can do with the date, and ask what each choice costs. The fares and the rules are entirely the airline’s and they differ from one ticket to the next, so no article can tell you in advance what you will be offered. If the airline needs notice to change a booking, an early call keeps more options open than a call from the departure hall.
If your trip is unavoidable, keep the application alive: reply to anything IRCC sends, keep the number, and keep checking. If the flight has to move, the eTA does not need to change, because it is linked to your passport and not to a date. What happens to an eTA when the airline cancels or moves a flight covers that side in detail.
Does an approved eTA guarantee entry?
No. IRCC states that a valid eTA and travel document do not guarantee you can enter Canada. A border services officer decides when you arrive. The eTA lets you board; the officer checks that you are the person who was approved and that you meet the entry requirements. For a rushed trip, carry what a calm trip would carry: the same passport, the address you will stay at and, if a minor child is with you, a parental or guardian letter authorizing the trip.
The short version
- Apply immediately and put the urgent reason and your date in the additional-details box.
- There is no rush service to choose; most decisions arrive within minutes and some take several days.
- Check the inbox and the junk folder, and compare the passport number in the approval with your passport.
- The 72-hour next-steps email can arrive after a 48-hour departure, so plan for the slow case.
- Without an approved eTA, the airline will not let you board.
- If there is no decision a day out, speak to the airline about changing the date.
FAQ
Can I get an eTA in 24 hours? Often a decision arrives within minutes, but no one can promise a time, because some applications need several days. If your flight is within a day, apply at once and treat the flight date as uncertain until the approval email is in your hands.
Is there an urgent or express eTA service? Not as a separate option on the application. The form has a box for additional details where an urgent need to travel can be explained, and you should fill it in, but IRCC does not state that it speeds up the decision.
What happens if I fly to Canada while my eTA is still pending? You will not be able to board. The airline checks for a valid eTA linked to your passport at check-in, and a pending application is not one. You would need to wait for the approval or change your flight.
Can I apply for an eTA at the airport? Do not plan on it. The airline checks the eTA before boarding the flight to Canada, so the approval has to exist before you reach the check-in desk, and an application started that late may simply not finish before the flight.
What if I made a mistake on the application and time is short? If the passport number in the approval is wrong, a new application with the right number is the only fix, and IRCC cautions that a late one is not always possible. Check the approval message as soon as it arrives so you still have time.
